In Germany there are a variety of state, church, community and private institutions that award scholarships or stipends to students. Students are often chosen based on knowledge, ability, and aptitude, but oftentimes one’s social engagement or level of need play an important role as well. The German government gives low interest loans to students who are in advanced semesters of studies. Such loans are available for two years of study, with a maximum sum of 7,200 €. They are granted independently of BaföG. The government is not legally obliged to provide this type of loan to students. More information can be found here: |

The Student Welfare Service grants no-interest loans to students who through no fault of their own are currently unable to finance their living expenses. These loans are awarded only for the short term. More information can be obtained from the Social Counselling Office of the Student Welfare Service. |
